![]() ![]() The teen characters definitely act like teenagers, which I think is a positive attribute for a teen fiction novel. There is a historical foundation in modern events that teens can relate to such as a character’s older, distant relative dying alone in an understaffed hospital from a virus, references to historical figures like George Floyd & Sandra Bland, class divisions & privilege, and a world ravaged by climate change. ![]() This is set in a future dystopian type of world, but it is not that distant from the present day. The Getaway is definitely a page-turner that explores how ordinary people do horrific things rather than what is more typical for the horror genre: hauntings, supernatural entities, or possession. Jay discovers that the mountain resort where he lives and works with his friends and family is also a doomsday oasis for the rich and powerful who expect top-notch customer service even as the world outside the resort’s walls disintegrates. ![]()
